Family Care Center Focuses on Healthy and Safe Newborns

The Family Care Center at Beloit Health System delivers approximately 600 newborns a year, most of them routine and predictable. However, situations can arise where mom or newborn have a health concern and this is where additional expertise is especially needed. Tests such as the Pulse Oximetry, which was recently recommended as a mandatory test by the Wisconsin Legislation, is performed in the Family Care Center.

The bill states that all babies born in Wisconsin should be screened for Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) prior to hospital discharge. Beloit Health System started doing the testing on all their newborns in February 2012. This simple and non-invasive test assures that babies go home without unrecognized critical heart defects.

“About 90% of the infants make the physiological adjustment immediately following birth smoothly and with little or no assistance needed,” explains Mindy Brancamp, Director of Beloit Health System’s Family Care Center. “But the remaining small percentage may need a little help.” This is why every RN in the Family Care Center is trained in Neonatal Resuscitation and there is resuscitation equipment including pulse oximetry available in every room.

“We are very proud of our healthy babies, satisfied families and high standards of care,” Brancamp adds. “The Center is highly progressive when it comes to the care of both our delivering moms and their newborns. We want them be confident and assured that you will get the best care possible. “

In the birth of their first child, Tracy and Chad Cusick, of Roscoe, discovered they were going to deliver their baby via C-section due to their doctor’s recommendation. “Dr. Tan was extremely caring and helpful in explaining the importance of delivering our baby via C-section in order for everyone to be healthy and safe,” recalls Tracy. “I truly can’t say enough about my birthing experience and the Family Care staff for all of their kindness, support and going beyond what was expected.”

Skills and Safety for Healthy Newborns

  • Staff- Beloit Health System’s Family Care staff is skilled and trained to provide expert testing in some important areas of infant health. Every RN is trained in Neonatal Resuscitation and has practiced drills and passed skills tests for rare, but potential, situations such as labor and delivery emergencies.
  • Respiratory Care- The Family Care Center offer CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) to assist newborns who need respiration assistance. This allows the Family Care Center to stabilize and to keep more newborns in the nursery and close to their parents.
  • Hearing Screening- Every newborn has a hearing screening. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, hearing loss is one of most frequently occurring birth defects. Approximately three out of 1000 infants are born with moderate, profound, or severe hearing loss. If hearing loss is not detected and treated early, it can impede speech, language and cognitive development.
  • Heart Health- Every newborn also has a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) pulse oximetry test. This is a simple, non-invasive test. If abnormal results are found, an Echo may be performed and a referral made to our UW Pediatric Cardiologist. This is an important test to be sure babies go home healthy without unrecognized critical heart defects.
  • Baby Warmers- The Family Care Center has new GE Warmers used for all deliveries, including C-section infants in the operating room. The Warmers have all the equipment necessary for a complete infant resuscitation if necessary.
  • Alarm System- For additional safety for newborns, the Family Care Center has a sophisticated infant alarm system with staff who routinely practice potential infant abduction drills.
