The Family Care Center at Beloit Health System delivers approximately 600 newborns a year, most of them routine and predictable. However, situations can arise where mom or newborn have a health concern and this is where additional expertise is especially needed. Tests such as the Pulse Oximetry, which was recently recommended as a mandatory test by the Wisconsin Legislation, is performed in the Family Care Center.
The bill states that all babies born in Wisconsin should be screened for Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) prior to hospital discharge. Beloit Health System started doing the testing on all their newborns in February 2012. This simple and non-invasive test assures that babies go home without unrecognized critical heart defects.
“About 90% of the infants make the physiological adjustment immediately following birth smoothly and with little or no assistance needed,” explains Mindy Brancamp, Director of Beloit Health System’s Family Care Center. “But the remaining small percentage may need a little help.” This is why every RN in the Family Care Center is trained in Neonatal Resuscitation and there is resuscitation equipment including pulse oximetry available in every room.
“We are very proud of our healthy babies, satisfied families and high standards of care,” Brancamp adds. “The Center is highly progressive when it comes to the care of both our delivering moms and their newborns. We want them be confident and assured that you will get the best care possible. “
In the birth of their first child, Tracy and Chad Cusick, of Roscoe, discovered they were going to deliver their baby via C-section due to their doctor’s recommendation. “Dr. Tan was extremely caring and helpful in explaining the importance of delivering our baby via C-section in order for everyone to be healthy and safe,” recalls Tracy. “I truly can’t say enough about my birthing experience and the Family Care staff for all of their kindness, support and going beyond what was expected.”
