Eligibility Criteria
- Acute Renal Failure. Not seeking dialysis or renal transplant, or is discontinuing dialysis.
And
- Creatine Clearance <10 ml/min (15 ml/min for diabetics) or <15 ml/min (20 ml/min diabetics) with comorbidity of CHF
Or
- Serum Creatinine > 8.0 (>6.0 for Diabetics)
Or
- GFR <10 ml/min (Required for acute. Suggested for chronic)
Comorbid Conditions
- Malignancy (other organ system)
- COPD
- Advanced Cardiac Disease
- Advanced Liver Disease
- Immunosuppresion/AIDS
- Albumin <3.5
- Platelet Count <25,000
- Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation
- GI Bleed
Signs and Symptoms of Renal Failure
- Uremia
- Oliguria (<400cL/24hours)
- Intractable hyperkalemia (>7.0), not responsive to treatment
- Uremic pericarditis
- Hepatorenal Syndrome
- Intractable fluid overload, not responsive to treatment
Hospice may choose to cover dialysis under special circumstances.
